IN THE FIRST LINES (Ivry-sur-Seine)

At 72 years old, José Mario Branco remains a committed man, singer-songwriter, he is an artist who has always considered music and songs as a weapon (“A cantiga é uma arma”).

Committed from his earliest years against the dictatorship of Salazar, José Mario Branco experienced torture and prison at the age of 20. In 1963, fleeing the colonial war and the political police, he took the path of exile and arrived in France. During his eleven years in Paris, he established himself as one of the big names in Portuguese song, committed and militant. His records circulate illegally in Portugal. At that time, he also signed the arrangements of many pieces, including the famous "Grândola, Vila Morena" by José Afonso which would become a few years later the signal for the Carnation Revolution.

On April 25, 1974, the coup d'état of the Armed Forces Movement put an end to 48 years of dictatorship in Portugal. The people invade the streets of Lisbon and in the days that follow, the political prisoners are released and the exiles return to the country. Everything seems possible. Everything is to be imagined. A new Portugal is to be built. It is in this climate of jubilation that José Mario Branco, back in Portugal, unites the talents of artists committed to bringing the ideals of the revolution to the four corners of the country ...

Through the portrait of this artist, this documentary testifies to the singular journey of a man whose itinerary merges with the recent history of Portugal and opens the reflection on commitment ... yesterday and today.
